Bacterial Vaginosis: Why the Right Diagnosis Matters

Bacterial vaginosis, or BV, is a change in the balance of vaginal bacteria. It is one possible cause of altered discharge, but discharge appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Bacterial vaginosis, or BV, is a change in the balance of vaginal bacteria. It is one possible cause of altered discharge, but discharge appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

What BV may look like

A thin greyish-white discharge and a noticeable fishy smell can occur. Many people have no symptoms. Marked itching or soreness may point towards another or an additional problem.

A clinician may examine you or take a swab to distinguish BV from other infections. Treatment may involve prescribed antibiotics. If you are pregnant, tell the clinician and seek advice about symptoms rather than self-treating.

Avoid assumptions about hygiene or relationships

A change in discharge is a health concern, not proof that someone is unclean or that a partner has been unfaithful. An accurate history is more useful than blame. Explain when symptoms started, whether they recur and what treatments you have used.

Bring the names of any intimate washes, gels or medicines. If symptoms returned after treatment, describe how long you felt better before they came back.

Make follow-up practical

Ask how test results will be communicated, what to do if symptoms persist and whether partner-related advice applies to your situation. Do not assume that the treatment for a previous episode is correct for every new episode.

Before leaving, clarify whether you need a review or only need to return if symptoms recur. Keeping a simple record of confirmed diagnoses and prescriptions can make future consultations more productive than repeatedly starting from memory.
