Before Gynaecological Surgery: A Practical Pre-Assessment Checklist
Pre-assessment helps the surgical and anaesthetic teams plan care around your health and the proposed procedure. It is also the time to resolve practical questions before the day of surgery.

Bring one accurate medicine list
Include prescriptions, over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal supplements. Mention allergies, previous anaesthetic problems and relevant medical conditions.
Ask exactly which medicines to continue or pause and when. Do not stop blood thinners, diabetes medicines or other treatment based on a generic internet checklist.
Confirm the individual instructions
Fasting, arrival and preparation instructions should come from your hospital. Ask for them in writing and clarify anything that conflicts with earlier advice.
Tell the team if you become unwell before the operation or if pregnancy is possible. Confirm whether tests or specialist reviews are still pending and who will follow them up.
Plan the first days afterwards
Ask about expected hospital stay, transport, an accompanying adult after anaesthesia and help at home. Discuss work, lifting, travel and caring responsibilities so recovery advice is practical.
Before the operation, make sure you understand the intended procedure, important risks, alternatives and how results will be communicated. Before discharge, obtain the operation summary, medicine instructions and urgent contact details. A well-organised plan does not remove every uncertainty, but it reduces avoidable confusion when you are recovering and may find it harder to remember new information.
