HPV Vaccination: Planning Cervical-Cancer Prevention

HPV vaccination helps prevent infection with virus types associated with cervical cancer. It is an important prevention measure, alongside appropriate screening and follow-up.

HPV vaccination helps prevent infection with virus types associated with cervical cancer. It is an important prevention measure, alongside appropriate screening and follow-up.

Understand prevention rather than treatment

Vaccination is intended to prevent infection and related disease; it does not treat an existing cervical abnormality. WHO prioritises vaccination in younger adolescents, before exposure to HPV.

The suitable schedule depends on age, immune status, the vaccine and applicable local guidance. Ask a qualified clinician about the recommendation for you or your child rather than copying a schedule from another country.

Bring the vaccination record

If a previous dose was given, bring its date and product name if known. Ask how to complete an incomplete course and whether any medical history affects the plan.

Clarify expected side effects, where the vaccine will be administered and what documentation you will receive. Keep the record with other health information so future clinicians can see what has been given.

Keep screening in the plan

Vaccination does not remove the need for cervical screening when it is recommended. Ask when screening is appropriate for your age and circumstances, and follow up abnormal results as advised.

New symptoms such as bleeding after sex or between periods should be assessed rather than waiting for a screening appointment. Prevention works best as a clear long-term plan: vaccination where appropriate, screening at the recommended interval and timely investigation of symptoms. Avoid claims that any vaccine or test offers complete protection against every cervical problem.
