Periods Stopping Before 45: Why Early Menopause Needs Assessment
Periods becoming irregular or stopping before age 45 should prompt a medical discussion. Menopause occurring early has implications beyond hot flushes.

Establish the diagnosis carefully
Early menopause refers to menopause before 45, while premature menopause occurs before 40. Missed periods can also have other causes, so symptoms alone should not be used to make the diagnosis.
A clinician may review your history and arrange tests where appropriate. Bring information about cycle changes, medicines, previous surgery or cancer treatment and any family history of early menopause.
Discuss long-term health as well as symptoms
Lower hormone levels at a younger age can affect bone and cardiovascular health. Ask what treatment and monitoring are appropriate for you, including whether hormone replacement is recommended.
Do not assume that advice aimed at someone in their late fifties applies unchanged to someone in their thirties.
Make room for fertility and emotional questions
If you hoped to have a pregnancy, ask for a clear explanation of what the findings mean and whether specialist fertility advice is needed. Avoid drawing conclusions from one test result without a full review.
The diagnosis can be upsetting or unexpected. You may want a second appointment to absorb the information and discuss options. Ask for a written plan covering symptoms, bone health, contraception where relevant and follow-up. Support should account for your age and priorities, rather than treating this as simply an earlier version of an expected midlife change.
