Pre-eclampsia: Why Blood Pressure Checks Matter
Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related condition involving high blood pressure that can have serious complications. Early changes may be found at routine checks before you notice symptoms.

Routine checks and warning symptoms serve different purposes
Blood pressure and urine checks help identify concerns. Severe persistent headache, visual changes, pain below the ribs, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell needs immediate assessment. Symptoms can also occur after birth.
Contact your maternity team urgently if these develop. Do not wait for the next antenatal appointment or assume that a recent normal check rules out a new problem.
Understand your individual monitoring plan
If blood pressure is raised, ask what further tests are needed and how often you should be reviewed. The team may assess blood tests and the baby’s growth as part of the wider picture.
If home readings are requested, confirm the device, technique, schedule and exact action thresholds with your clinician. Recording a number is only useful when you know what to do with it.
Plan beyond a single reading
Ask whether medicines, hospital assessment or changes to birth planning are being considered, and why. Do not start or stop blood-pressure treatment without advice.
Before going home after delivery, clarify whether blood-pressure checks or medicines need to continue and which symptoms require urgent help. Keep the discharge plan available to other clinicians you may see. The condition deserves follow-up even when the baby has been born and attention naturally shifts to newborn care.
